From the San Juan Islander:
“Ferries: Good news and bad news
“The San Juans/Anacortes ferry route will have the Samish, Washington State ferries newest boat, beginning on the summer schedule. The boat could begin service earlier depending on when it finishes up its sea trials.
“Tentatively scheduled for May 20 is an opportunity for the public to tour the Samish while it is tied up at the Anacortes terminal. More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
“Now the bad news. The Sealth, which carries 50 fewer passengers than a Super Class ferry, is now in service on the Friday Harbor to Anacortes route and will remain so until June 13. This means 200 less spaces from Anacortes to Friday Harbor each day (6:20, 9:30 a.m. and 2:40, 6 p.m. sailings) during the spring schedule which includes six weeks of the peak season May 1-June 13.
“Capacity is also reduced 200 spaces on sailings from Friday Harbor to Anacortes (8:05, 11:05 a.m. and 4:15, 7:45 p.m.)”
The Hiyu is out of service tomorrow. WSF has posted an alternative schedule for inter-island traffic for Wednesday. It is as follows:
Anacortes/San Juan routes: Service updates for Wednesday
Schedule for Wednesday, October 12 The Hiyu is out of service for necessary repairs. Service for early Wednesday morning is as follows:
- The Hyak will make a 6:20 a.m. westbound departure from Anacortes and make all stops. The vessel will stop at Lopez at 7:10 a.m., Shaw at 7:15 a.m., Orcas at 7:35 a.m. and Friday Harbor at 8:15 a.m.
- Eastbound the Hyak will depart Friday Harbor at 8:30 a.m., stopping at Orcas at 9:15 a.m., Shaw at 9:30 a.m. and Lopez at 9:50 a.m. before returning to Anacortes at 10:30 a.m. Times are approximates.
- Inter-island service will resume with the 9:55 a.m. sailing from Lopez, provided by the 64-car Chetzemoka. This vessel is new to the islands so sailing times may vary. Updates on sailing times and delays will occur throughout the day.
For additional information, check the WSF page for Ferry Alerts.
This month’s Ferry Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 19 in Friday Harbor, not tomorrow (normal schedule). A reminder will be posted early next week.
While riding the 6:35 a.m. ferry this morning, I heard that it may be 2-3 weeks before the Yakima is back in service. This does impact service as the Evergreen State is a smaller, slower boat. The staff at the Lopez landing has posted important information regarding this on the Lopez Rocks site. I’m posting it here for readers who may not read Lopez Rocks.
In case you haven’t already heard, we’re looking at reduced service for a few days. Here’s a notice posted by the Kitsap Sun.
ANACORTES, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state ferry system says riders in the San Juan Islands can expect delays through the weekend and into next week while a ferry is out for repair.
The Yakima was taken out of service Friday because of abnormal wear on a propulsion shaft bearing.
The ferry system is shifting some vessels but they will not be able to carry as many vehicles on the route between Anacortes and the islands.
