Ferry news for the week of February 17th – 23rd.
Incoming Governor Inslee has named noted transit & sustainability advocate Lynn Peterson as the new head of the Department of Transportation. No word yet as to whether David Moseley will retain his position as Assistant Secretary of WSF.
Two bills introduced to the legislature would wrest control of ferry design from WSF and place it into the hands of the legislature itself. Mark Nitchman calls this idea “Genesis of a new Lemon Class era.”
Details of the House transportation revenue package are unveiled, which includes increases in car tab fees, the gas tax, and even a fee on bicycles.
Ferry ridership remained stable in 2012, with an overall drop in ridership of only 1/10th of 1 percent. Traffic to the San Juans increased 7.9%.
