Staffing issues?

Over the summer a number of sailings have been canceled. The aging fleet is part of the problem as we saw first hand when the Evergreen State was pulled out of service more than once this summer.

But another issue is staffing. This last weekend, a total of six runs were canceled due to ‘staffing issues.’ Enough that KOMO news took notice. Click here to read the KOMO web post and view video of an interview with David Moseley.

This is a growing concern, particularly for those of us in ferry-dependent communities without a drive around option.

I agree this is becoming an issue for the San JUan runs. A number of the cancellations recently have been the early “commuter run” from Lopez to FH. This had a huge impact on workers headed to FH as the next boat was several hours later – difficult to miss work without another option of getting there at a reasonable time.

Yes. Some of our service disruptions this summer were due to mechanical issues with the Evergreen State. But since WSF has reduced staffing systemwide, there is a definite increase in the numbers of runs canceled because there isn’t a full crew.
